SEO Guide for Nepali Businesses

This SEO guide for Nepali businesses covers what actually gets a local company found on Google, in the order I do it for clients: search behaviour in Nepal, keyword research when the data is thin, technical foundations, on-page work, Google Business Profile, content, links and measurement. It is written for owners and marketers doing it themselves or judging someone who is.

Why SEO matters for a business in Nepal

Most of the country is now online, and for a great many people the phone is the only device they use. Google is the search engine nearly all of them use, and searching before buying is now normal for restaurants, doctors, trekking companies, banks and schools alike. Paid ads reach those searchers as long as you pay; ranking reaches them for as long as the page holds, which is why SEO is the most cost-effective channel most Nepali businesses have not yet done properly. The Chandragiri Hills case study is a typical example: a well-known brand with almost no organic traffic, then 180% growth in six months once the basics were done.

How Nepalis search

Three things shape search demand in Nepal. Most searches happen on a mobile phone, often on a slow connection, so speed and mobile layout are ranking and conversion factors at once. Searches mix English, romanized Nepali and Devanagari (“dentist in Kathmandu”, “kathmandu ma dentist”, “दन्त चिकित्सक काठमाडौं”), and the English form usually carries the most measurable volume for commercial terms. And a large share of local intent goes to the map pack, so a Google Business Profile is not optional. Businesses selling abroad (tourism, IT services, remittance) face a different search market, covered under international SEO.

Keyword research when the data is thin

Keyword tools show low or zero volume for many Nepal terms, not because nobody searches but because the tools have little data for the market. The method that works:

  1. Start from what customers ask on the phone, on Facebook and on WhatsApp, and write those questions down in the words they use.
  2. Check Google’s own suggestions, People Also Ask and the related searches at the bottom of the page for each phrase.
  3. Use Search Console, if the site has any history, to see the queries that already produce impressions.
  4. Use a keyword tool for relative comparison and for the English commercial terms, and treat zero-volume results as unknown rather than as zero.
  5. Group the terms by intent: one page per intent, not one page per keyword. “IVF cost”, “IVF price Nepal” and “how much does IVF cost in Kathmandu” are one page.

The full service, including a mapping of every term to a page, is keyword research; the keyword clustering tool does the grouping for a pasted list.

Technical SEO: make the site crawlable and fast

Technical SEO is whether Google can find, load, read and index your pages. In Nepali sites the recurring problems are: page builders with dozens of plugins loading in six seconds or more on mobile data; no XML sitemap or a sitemap full of tag pages; important pages blocked or set to noindex by accident; duplicate versions of the site (http and https, www and non-www) both live; broken internal links after a redesign; and no schema markup. The order to fix: indexability first (can Google reach the pages that matter?), then speed and Core Web Vitals, then structure and schema. The SEO audit checklist walks through each item; the service is technical SEO, and speed work specifically is website speed and Core Web Vitals optimization. If you are about to redesign, read website migration SEO first; changing every URL without redirects is how sites lose years of rankings in a week.

On-page SEO: one page, one intent

Each page should answer one search intent, say so in its title tag and H1, and back it up in the first paragraph. Practically: a unique title under about 60 characters with the main term near the front; a meta description that says what the page offers and for whom; one H1; H2s that match the sub-questions people ask; the main term used naturally, not repeated; internal links with descriptive anchor text to related pages; and images with real file names and alt text. Nepali sites often have a single “Services” page listing ten services in a paragraph each; splitting that into one page per service is the on-page change that most often moves rankings. The title and meta checker catches length problems, and the service is on-page SEO.

Local SEO and Google Business Profile

For any business with a location, the map pack is where local searches convert. The profile needs the correct primary category, a name that matches the signboard (not stuffed with keywords), accurate hours, a phone number that is answered, a description that says what you do and where, photos taken by you, products or services listed, and a steady flow of reviews with replies. Citations on the Nepali directories that matter and a consistent name, address and phone across the web support it. The service pages are local SEO and Google Business Profile optimization, and the local SEO checklist is the working document.

Content that earns rankings

Content works when it answers what people search for better than the pages already ranking. For a Nepali business that usually means three kinds of page: service pages that explain what you do, for whom, at what price range and how to start; location and area pages where you genuinely serve different places; and guides that answer the questions before purchase (“things to do near Kathmandu”, “how much does a hair transplant cost in Nepal”, “documents needed for a study visa”). Chandragiri Hills grew by publishing destination guides for experience searches rather than waiting for people to search its name. Thin pages written for keywords, and AI-generated articles nobody checked, do not hold rankings. The services are content SEO and strategy and SEO content writing.

Links from other sites still signal that a page is worth ranking, and in Nepal the honest sources are limited but real: news coverage, industry associations, partner and supplier sites, event listings, university and NGO pages for relevant work, and guest contributions to Nepali publications. Bought links from link farms and blog networks are the fastest way to a penalty, and I see the damage regularly. Focus on being mentioned for something real, and on internal linking, which you fully control. The service is link building, and recovery from bad links is under penalty and traffic drop recovery.

Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, and answer engines such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, now answer some questions directly and cite a few sources. For Nepali businesses the effect so far is on informational queries; commercial and local searches still show the familiar results and map pack. The work that gets a site cited is the same work that ranks it, plus clear, factual, well-structured answers and correct schema. The AI search optimization guide covers this in depth, and the services sit under AI search optimization.

Measuring SEO

Rankings are a means; the measures are organic sessions, the pages that receive them, and the enquiries they produce. Search Console shows queries, impressions, clicks and average position for free and is the first tool to set up. GA4 with events for calls, WhatsApp clicks and forms shows what that traffic does. A monthly view of both, by page, tells you what to write next and what to fix. Setup is covered under analytics and tracking.

How long SEO takes and what it costs

Technical fixes can move rankings within weeks if the site was badly broken. New content and local work typically show meaningful movement in three to six months, and results compound afterwards, unlike ads that stop when the budget does. Ongoing SEO for a Nepal business is priced in three monthly tiers, Starter at USD 500 a month, Growth at USD 900 a month, and Enterprise quoted after scoping, with the scope of each on the SEO packages page and the wider picture in the digital marketing cost guide. Be wary of anyone promising page one in a fixed number of days, or of prices that could not possibly cover the work described in this guide.

Mistakes that hold Nepali sites back

  • One page for all services, and no page for the location.
  • Redesigning the site and changing every URL without redirects.
  • A slow theme and thirty plugins on shared hosting.
  • A Google Business Profile with the wrong category, no photos and unanswered reviews.
  • Bought backlinks and directory spam.
  • Judging SEO by a rank-tracking widget rather than by enquiries.
  • Stopping after three months, just before it works.

If you would rather have this done than do it, the SEO services hub lists every service, and the free SEO audit is the place to start. Everything else on this site that helps is on the resources page.

Frequently asked questions

How long does SEO take in Nepal?

Technical fixes on a broken site can show results within weeks. New content, local work and links usually need three to six months before the movement is meaningful, and the results keep compounding after that. Anyone promising page one in a fixed number of days is promising something they do not control.

Can I do SEO for my own business?

Yes, for the basics: Google Business Profile, one page per service, sensible titles, fast hosting, Search Console and a habit of publishing answers to customer questions. Technical audits, migrations and competitive content are where a specialist earns the fee. The checklists on the resources page are the same ones I use.

Does SEO work for Nepali-language searches?

Yes. Google indexes Devanagari and romanized Nepali, and for some categories those searches convert better than English ones. The practical approach is to write the page in the language customers use and to include the English term where it carries the commercial volume, without duplicating pages for every spelling.

How much does SEO cost in Nepal?

Ongoing SEO comes in three monthly tiers: Starter at USD 500 a month, Growth at USD 900 a month, and Enterprise quoted after scoping. Which tier fits depends on the number of services, locations and the competitiveness of the terms. One-off audits and migrations are priced as projects. The SEO packages page lists tiers and what each includes.

Is SEO still worth it with AI search?

Yes. Commercial and local searches in Nepal still show standard results and the map pack, and AI answers cite pages that would rank anyway. The work is the same, with more emphasis on clear factual answers and structured data. The AI search optimization guide covers what changes.
