Why tracking comes before spend
Smart bidding, search-term decisions, budget allocation and every report all read from one place: the conversions column. If that column counts contact-page views, double-counts a form, or misses the phone calls that make up half your leads, everything downstream is optimized toward the wrong thing. The Better Broking account is the clearest example I have: it was spending with no conversion tracking at all, and the rebuild that cut cost per acquisition by 35% started with Tag Manager tags for forms and calls, before a single keyword changed.
What gets tracked
| Lead type | How it is captured | Counts as |
|---|---|---|
| Website form submission | GTM trigger on successful submit or thank-you page, sent to GA4 and Google Ads | Primary conversion, once per session |
| Phone call from ad | Google forwarding number on call assets and call ads | Primary, with minimum call length |
| Phone call from website | Click-to-call tag on mobile, or a call-tracking number for landline calls | Primary or secondary depending on call quality |
| WhatsApp or Messenger click | GTM click trigger on the chat link or button | Secondary until reply quality is known, then primary |
| Purchase | Ecommerce event with value and transaction ID, deduplicated | Primary with value, for Target ROAS |
| Booking or appointment | Event from the booking tool’s confirmation step | Primary |
| Qualified lead or sale from CRM | Offline conversion import keyed on GCLID or enhanced-conversion data | Primary once import is stable |
How the setup is built
GA4 and Google Ads: which one owns the conversion
I create conversion actions directly in Google Ads for the events bidding depends on, and mark the matching GA4 events as key events for reporting. Importing the same event from both places creates duplicates, so each conversion has one source, documented in the account.
Google Tag Manager
All tags live in a GTM container that you own. Form submissions are tracked on real success (a thank-you page, a confirmation event or a form-library callback), not on button clicks, which fire whether or not the form validated. The Google tag, conversion linker and consent settings are configured so click IDs survive to the conversion.
Enhanced conversions
Where the form collects an email or phone number, enhanced conversions send a hashed version alongside the conversion so Google can attribute leads that cookies missed. This matters most for iOS traffic and for Australian, UK and US accounts where browser restrictions are tighter.
Call tracking
Calls from ads are tracked with Google forwarding numbers. Calls from the site use a call-tracking provider when the client needs recordings or a tracked number per campaign; otherwise a click-to-call tag covers mobile traffic, which is most Nepal traffic.
Offline conversion import
For businesses where the lead becomes a customer days later, over the phone or in a meeting, the website conversion is only half the story. I capture the GCLID into a hidden form field and your CRM or a Google Sheet, then import qualified leads and sales back into Google Ads as conversions with values. Target CPA then learns from real customers, not enquiries, which is the single biggest improvement available to lead-generation accounts once the basics are right. This connects to the wider lead generation campaigns work.
Verification
Every conversion action is fired in GTM preview mode and Tag Assistant, checked in the Google Ads conversions diagnostics view, and cross-checked against GA4 real-time. The setup document lists each action, its trigger and its expected count so you or a future manager can re-test it.
Reporting and Looker Studio
Once conversions are trustworthy I connect Google Ads and GA4 to a Looker Studio dashboard: spend, conversions, cost per conversion and, where values are imported, return on ad spend, by campaign and by month. Lead-generation clients also get a lead source view so the sales team can see which campaigns and keywords produced the customers who paid. Wider analytics work, including GA4 property setup and cross-channel reporting, is under analytics and tracking.
What breaks tracking in Nepal, and how I handle it
- Leads arrive on WhatsApp or by phone, not through forms. Chat clicks and calls are tracked as their own conversion actions, and lead quality is fed back through offline import.
- Forms without a thank-you page. The tag is attached to the form’s success event instead, or a thank-you page is added.
- Payment gateways that redirect off-site. Purchase events are fired from the return page with the transaction ID so they are not double-counted on refresh.
- Multiple agencies’ tags in one theme file. Everything is moved into a single GTM container and the old hard-coded tags removed.
Process and what you receive
- Map every lead and sale path with you, including the ones that happen offline.
- Build or clean the GTM container; create GA4 key events and Google Ads conversion actions with one owner each.
- Add enhanced conversions, call tracking and, where relevant, offline import.
- Test-fire each conversion and document it.
- Connect the Looker Studio dashboard and hand over access.
You receive a working setup you own, a written tag map, and a dashboard. Tracking setup is included in PPC management and Google Ads setup, and is also available as a standalone fix after a Google Ads audit finds the gaps. The same principles apply to Meta, where the equivalent service is Pixel and Conversions API setup.
Pricing
Standalone tracking setup is quoted from the number of conversion paths and systems involved; see the Google Ads packages and pricing page. If you are unsure whether your current tracking is right, the free Google Ads audit tests it and tells you. Back to all Google Ads services.
