How clients search for a lawyer
Someone with a legal problem searches the problem, then the practice area and place, then the firm: “can my landlord evict me without notice”, “property lawyer in Kathmandu”, “family lawyer Parramatta”, “personal injury attorney Houston”, then the name of the firm they found and its reviews. Legal searches are among the most valuable in search advertising for a reason: one client can be worth thousands of dollars in fees, and the person searching is ready to act. Law firm SEO, part of my SEO services and listed on the SEO services by industry hub, is the work of owning those practice-area and location searches with pages that demonstrate competence and make the enquiry easy.
In Nepal, most law firm websites are a homepage with a partners list, so the searches go to directories and to the handful of firms that wrote practice pages. In the USA, the UK and Australia, legal SEO is one of the most competitive fields there is: national directories, large firms and legal marketing agencies compete on every practice-area term, and the firms that win are the ones with the deepest practice pages, the most and best reviews, and the strongest local signals in their city.
What changes for law firms
- Advertising rules govern the copy. Bar and law society rules in each market restrict claims about outcomes, specialization titles, comparisons and testimonials. I draft to the local rule and the firm confirms before publication.
- Credibility is checked in detail. Legal content is “your money or your life” content for Google: named lawyers with bar admissions, years and areas of practice, authored content, and consistent details across the site, the Google profile and the bar register.
- Practice pages are the product pages. Each practice area, and each significant matter type within it, needs its own page explaining the law, the process, the timelines, the fees or fee basis and what to bring to the first meeting.
- Local search is decisive. “Lawyer near me” and “[practice] lawyer [city]” show a map pack, and the firms in it get most of the calls. The Google profile, reviews with replies and office location pages carry that weight.
- Competition abroad is expensive. Where a click on “attorney” costs more than most keywords in any industry, organic rankings are worth a great deal, and the standard required to earn them is correspondingly high.
Typical work and deliverables
- Practice area architecture: one page per practice area and per matter type with demand (divorce, child custody, property division; company registration, contract drafting, foreign investment), written around what the client needs to know and ending in a consultation path.
- Lawyer profile pages with admissions, education, practice areas, languages, publications and cases where rules permit, with Attorney and LegalService schema through the schema markup service, and linked from every practice they handle.
- Local SEO: Google profile categories per practice, reviews with a compliant request process, office location pages and citations in the legal directories that matter in your market, following my local SEO service.
- Legal question content: plain-language answers to the questions clients search before contacting a lawyer, reviewed by the responsible lawyer and linked to the practice page, planned with content SEO and strategy.
- Technical baseline: speed, indexation, secure forms and click-to-call that work on mobile, where most legal searches happen.
- Reporting on consultation requests and calls from organic search by practice area, with call tracking where the firm wants it.
Mistakes I see on law firm sites
- “Areas of practice” as a list of twenty headings with a sentence each, so no practice can rank.
- Lawyer pages that omit admissions and experience, which are the first things Google and clients look for.
- Articles that restate statutes without explaining what they mean for the reader.
- “Best lawyer in Kathmandu” and outcome claims that breach advertising rules.
- No Google reviews, or reviews requested in ways the rules prohibit.
- Abroad: paying an agency for hundreds of generic blog posts while the practice pages stay thin and the profile stays neglected.
Full stack for law and professional services
SEO builds the practice and question pages that keep producing enquiries; paid search covers the high-value practice terms while they rank. For the same industry I run Google Ads for law firms with the policy and verification requirements handled, Facebook and Instagram ads for law firms for awareness and retargeting, a coordinated digital marketing plan for law and professional services, and automation for law and professional services that routes enquiries to the right lawyer and books consultations. Accountants, consultants and other expertise firms are covered on the professional services SEO page.
Next step
Request a free law firm SEO check with your site and your most valuable practice areas. I will report which practice searches you rank for, how your profile compares with the firms in your map pack, and what to build first. Firms in Nepal usually sit at the Starter or Growth tier on the SEO packages and pricing page; firms in the USA, UK and Australia are invoiced in their own currency at rates 40 to 60% below comparable local agencies.
