Which businesses TikTok works for
TikTok is an entertainment feed, not a search engine, so it sells things people can be persuaded to want rather than things they have already decided to buy. It works for consumer products with visual appeal, food and hospitality, fashion and beauty, fitness, travel and trekking, events, education consultancies reaching school leavers, and app installs. It works for local businesses whose customers are under about 35.
It rarely works for B2B services with long sales cycles, for professional services bought at a moment of need, or for any business that cannot commit to producing new video regularly. If nobody in your organisation will appear on camera and there is no budget for creators, the campaign will fail on creative no matter how the targeting is set. In that case Meta Ads or Google search ads are a better use of the money, and I will say so on the call.
The creative decides the result
On most ad platforms targeting and bidding do the heavy lifting. On TikTok the creative does. The algorithm shows an ad to people who behave like the people who watched it, so a video that holds attention for the first two seconds gets cheap distribution and one that does not gets expensive distribution. That changes how the work is organised:
- Shoot vertical, native and specific. A repurposed television commercial or a static image with text is recognised as an ad and skipped.
- Open with the hook. The first two seconds decide whether the rest is watched. State the problem, show the result, or say something that stops a thumb.
- Sound matters. Unlike Meta, most TikTok viewing has sound on, so voice-over and music are part of the ad, and captions still go on for the rest.
- Volume beats polish. Plan several new videos a month, not one perfect film a quarter. Fatigue arrives faster here than on any other platform.
- Use real people. Staff, customers and creators outperform actors and stock footage consistently.
Where a client has no in-house production, I brief creators and work from their footage; the relationship side of that is influencer marketing. The same principles applied to Meta placements are on Meta ad creative and video ads on Meta.
Formats and campaign types
| Format | What it is | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| In-feed ads | A video in the For You feed | The default for traffic, leads and sales |
| Spark Ads | Paid promotion of a real organic post, from your account or a creator’s | Credibility: the ad keeps its comments, likes and profile link |
| Lead generation | An instant form inside the app | Enquiries where a website visit would lose most people |
| Catalogue and shopping | Product feed ads and in-app shopping formats | Retail, where availability differs by country |
| App campaigns | Install and in-app event optimization | Consumer apps and games |
Spark Ads are usually where I start. Promoting a post that already exists keeps the social proof attached to the ad, sends clicks to a profile that looks alive, and lets you scale something the audience has already reacted to instead of guessing.
Targeting and budget
TikTok’s targeting is broader and blunter than Meta’s, and that is not a flaw to fight. In practice a wide audience with strong creative beats a narrow audience with weak creative, because the algorithm finds the people who respond. I keep audiences broad at the top, use interest and behaviour signals as a starting nudge rather than a cage, and reserve narrow targeting for retargeting site visitors, video viewers and customer lists. Budgets need enough daily spend for each ad group to leave the learning stage; splitting a small budget across many ad groups is the most common way local accounts stall.
Tracking, and why it needs extra care here
The TikTok pixel goes on through Google Tag Manager and, wherever the site allows it, the Events API sends the same conversions server-side so browser restrictions do not hide them. Attribution is the honest problem with this channel: people watch on TikTok and later search for your brand or type the URL, so platform-reported conversions and analytics rarely agree. I set expectations before launch by agreeing which measure decides success, usually total leads or sales at a target cost while spend increases, supported by asking new customers where they heard about you. The wider setup is analytics and tracking, reported alongside your other channels in a Looker Studio dashboard.
Running TikTok Ads in Nepal
TikTok has a large and young audience in Nepal, and local brands in food, fashion, education and travel are visible on it every day. Before recommending it to a Nepali business I check two practical things for your specific case: which formats and shopping features are enabled for the markets you want to reach. TikTok’s self-serve Ads Manager is available in a limited set of countries and Nepal is not among them, so a Nepal-registered advertiser reaches TikTok through an agency account with multi-country access rather than by opening an account directly. Where those are a barrier, the same audience can be reached through Facebook and Instagram ads with creative built the same way.
How I run a TikTok account
- Creative plan first. Who films, what the first month’s hooks are, and how new videos will keep arriving. Nothing launches without this answered.
- Tracking. Pixel, Events API where possible, conversions tested with a real submission.
- Launch broad with several creative angles in the same ad group, so the platform can find the winner.
- Read results by creative, not by audience: hold rate, cost per result, and what the comments say.
- Refresh before fatigue. New videos go in on a schedule, not when performance has already collapsed.
- Monthly report and call on cost per result and what to film next.
Fees and proof
Management is quoted per scope after a call and is on request; production or creator costs are separate and quoted with you before anything is commissioned. Engagements are month to month. To be straight about evidence: the results published on this site come from Google Ads, Meta Ads and SEO engagements, shown in the case studies. There is no TikTok case study yet, and I will not borrow someone else’s.
Ask before you commit a budget
Book a free 30-minute call with your product, your audience and what you can realistically film each month. If TikTok is not the right channel for that combination, you will hear it in the first ten minutes. I reply within 4 business hours on business days. Organic content planning is covered under social media marketing.
