What retargeting does for a Meta account
Prospecting introduces you; retargeting closes. Most people who click an ad, watch a video or open a form do not act the first time, and reaching them again costs a fraction of finding them in the first place. Properly segmented, retargeting is usually the lowest cost-per-result campaign in the account. Badly done, it is the same ad shown to everyone, including last week’s customers, twenty times each. The whole discipline is in the audiences, the exclusions and the creative sequence.
The audiences I build
Website custom audiences
From the Pixel and Conversions API: all visitors, product or service page viewers, pricing or booking page viewers, cart starters, form starters, and converters, each with a window matched to the buying cycle (a few days for a restaurant, months for a college or a property). These depend on the tracking described under Pixel and Conversions API setup; without it, only the engagement audiences below are available.
Engagement custom audiences
People who watched a share of a video, engaged with the page or Instagram profile, opened or submitted an instant form, or started a conversation. These work even for businesses without a website, which is why they are the first retargeting layer for many Nepal accounts, and they pair with the lead campaigns under Facebook lead ads.
Customer list audiences
Your CRM, past customers, newsletter list or lead sheet, uploaded hashed. Used to win back lapsed customers, to sell the next service to existing ones, to exclude current customers from prospecting, and as the seed for lookalikes.
Lookalike audiences
Meta finds people who resemble a seed audience: purchasers, qualified leads, or your best customer list. Lookalikes are prospecting rather than retargeting, but they are built from the same data and are the main way a small warm audience scales.
Advantage+ audience
Meta’s Advantage+ audience option treats your audience selections as suggestions and expands beyond them when it predicts better results. I allow it for prospecting on accounts with clean conversion data; for true retargeting, where the point is to reach a specific group, I keep audiences fixed so the campaign does what it says.
Creative that matches how warm the audience is
| Audience | What they already know | What the ad does |
|---|---|---|
| Video viewers, page engagers | Saw you once | Introduces the offer properly; invites a message or a form |
| Site visitors, form openers | Considered you | Answers objections: price, proof, process; direct ask |
| Cart starters, booking starters | Nearly acted | Reminder with the exact item, a reason to finish now |
| Past customers | Trust you | Next service, referral, review request, seasonal offer |
Each stage gets its own ad set and creative; showing a cold-audience ad to a warm audience wastes the warmth. Creative production follows Facebook ad creative and copywriting, and for stores the product-level version is catalog and dynamic product ads.
Exclusions and frequency
Converters are excluded from every retargeting ad set except the post-purchase one. Each warmer audience is excluded from the colder ad sets so a person sees one stage at a time. Frequency is watched weekly; when it climbs on a small audience, the creative is refreshed or the budget lowered rather than letting the same ad run until people hide it.
Setting up retargeting
- Confirm the Pixel, Conversions API and page engagement sources are collecting.
- Design the segment list from your funnel and buying cycle.
- Build website, engagement and customer-list audiences with matched windows.
- Write and brief creative per stage; set up the exclusion chain.
- Launch with modest budgets; review frequency, cost per result and audience sizes weekly.
- Build lookalikes from the best converters to feed prospecting.
What I see go wrong
- One “all visitors, 30 days” audience with the prospecting ad and no exclusions.
- Retargeting on an account whose Pixel fires “Lead” on page load, so everyone looks like a converter.
- Customer lists uploaded once and never refreshed.
- Audiences too small to deliver, left running for months with a handful of impressions.
Pricing and next step
Retargeting is set up and run within my monthly Facebook Ads management services fee; ranges are on the Meta Ads packages and pricing page. A free Meta Ads audit shows what audiences your account is collecting and wasting. The Google equivalent is Google remarketing, and the two are usually run together; all Meta Ads services are on the hub.
