UTM Builder (Free Tool)

Most messy GA4 reports come from inconsistent UTM tags: 'Facebook', 'facebook' and 'fb' counted as three sources. This UTM builder generates the link, lower-cases every parameter, replaces spaces, and warns when a value breaks the conventions I use on client accounts.

  • Lower-cases and normalises
  • Warns on common mistakes
  • Nothing is stored

Naming rules that keep reports clean

  • Lower case everything. GA4 treats Facebook and facebook as different sources.
  • utm_source is the site or platform (facebook, google, newsletter, partner-name). utm_medium is the type (cpc, paid_social, email, referral). Mixing them up breaks the default channel grouping.
  • utm_campaign names the effort, ideally with a date: dashain_offer_2026, not ‘campaign1’.
  • Do not tag internal links. A UTM on a link from your own homepage to your own service page restarts the session and hides the real source.
  • Google Ads uses auto-tagging. Leave manual tags off Google Ads final URLs unless auto-tagging is disabled, or you will double-report.

Why it matters for enquiries

The enquiry system on this site stores the UTM parameters, the landing page and the click identifiers with every lead, so a consistent naming scheme is what turns ‘we got 40 enquiries’ into ‘the Facebook lead-form campaign produced 18 at NPR 400 each’. Setting up that reporting end to end, from tagged links to GA4 to a Looker Studio dashboard, is the analytics and tracking service; the GA4 setup page covers the channel-grouping rules the mediums above map to.

Frequently asked questions

Do UTM parameters affect SEO?

Not if the tagged URLs are only used in ads, emails and social posts. If tagged URLs get indexed, the page should carry a canonical tag pointing to the clean URL, which this site does automatically.

Should I use UTM tags on Facebook ads?

Yes. Meta passes no source information to GA4 by itself. Set the tags in the ad's URL parameters field once at the ad level, using facebook or instagram as the source and paid_social as the medium.

What is the difference between utm_term and utm_content?

utm_term is the keyword or audience the click came from; utm_content distinguishes variants of the same campaign, such as two creatives or two buttons in one email.
