What programmatic SEO is, and when it works
Some search demand comes in patterns: “things to do in [town]” for every town in a region, “send money to Nepal from [country]” for every corridor, “[product] vs [product]” for every pair, “[software] integration with [tool]” for every integration. Writing each page by hand is impossible; leaving them unwritten hands the traffic to whoever has a database. Programmatic SEO, within my SEO services, is the practice of building those page sets from structured data through templates, so that each page is generated but each page is also specific, accurate and worth reading. It works when three conditions hold: the searches exist and follow a pattern, you have or can build data that differs meaningfully between pages, and the site can support the crawl and indexing of a large set. When any of the three is missing, it produces thin duplicates and I say so at the assessment.
Who this is for
- Destination and travel sites covering many places, such as the Travel Puglia destination site, whose location and experience page structure is the model I use.
- Remittance and fintech companies with a page per sending country, described on the remittance and fintech SEO page.
- Real estate sites with area and suburb pages, and multi-location businesses with location pages.
- SaaS products with integration, template and comparison pages, covered on the SaaS SEO page.
- Directories, marketplaces and job boards whose listings and categories are the product.
- Stores with attribute-driven category pages (brand plus type plus size) that match real searches.
What the programmatic SEO service includes
- Pattern research: the search patterns, their volume across the set, the modifiers that matter, and a decision on which combinations deserve a page, using my keyword research method at scale.
- Data design: the fields each page needs to be genuinely different (facts, figures, local details, images, reviews, related items), where each comes from, and how gaps are handled: a page with missing data is not published.
- Template design: the page structure with the data woven into readable content, unique titles and descriptions generated from the data, internal links to parents, siblings and related pages, and structured data per page type, following the on-page standards from my on-page SEO service.
- Hand-written layers: introductions, hub pages and the highest-value pages in the set written by a person, so the set has editorial content at the top and generated depth beneath.
- Indexing and crawl controls: rules for which combinations are indexable, canonicalization of near-duplicates, pagination, sitemap segmentation and crawl budget, through my technical SEO service.
- Quality gates: minimum data completeness, duplicate detection, thin-page thresholds and a review sample before every batch is published.
- Implementation: on WordPress with custom post types and fields, on headless or custom stacks with your developers, or through static generation, with the build process documented.
- Monitoring: indexation rate, rankings and traffic by segment of the set, with pages pruned or improved when a segment fails to earn its place.
How a page set is built
- Assessment. Is there a pattern with demand, is there data, can the site carry it. If the answer to any is no, the recommendation is not to build it.
- Data build. Sources gathered, cleaned and structured; gaps listed; enrichment planned where data is thin.
- Template and pilot. The template built and a pilot of twenty to fifty pages published and indexed, then measured for four to eight weeks.
- Scale in batches. The set released in segments, with indexation and quality checked at each step, rather than ten thousand pages on one day.
- Editorial layer. Hubs and priority pages written by hand and linked into the set.
- Prune and improve. Segments that do not index or rank are improved with more data or removed, quarterly.
Programmatic SEO mistakes
- A template with a city name swapped into the same three paragraphs, five thousand times.
- Pages generated for combinations nobody searches, because the data allowed it.
- Publishing the whole set at once and watching Google index a tenth of it.
- No hub or internal link structure, so pages are orphans reachable only from the sitemap.
- AI-generated filler used to make thin data look like content, which readers and Google both discount.
- No pruning, so the failed segments drag the site’s overall quality down at the next core update.
What you receive
- The assessment with the pattern, demand and data findings.
- The data model, the template, the indexing rules and the quality gates, documented.
- The pilot results and the batch rollout plan.
- Hand-written hub and priority pages, and segment-level monitoring and pruning.
Programmatic projects are scoped after the assessment and usually run within the Growth or Enterprise tier on the SEO packages and pricing page.
Next step
Request a free programmatic SEO assessment and describe the page set you have in mind and the data you hold. I will reply with whether the pattern has demand, whether the data can support it and what a pilot would look like. Related work is under SEO services.
