What AI Overviews and AI Mode change
An AI Overview is the generated answer Google shows above the results for some queries, with a small set of cited pages beside it. AI Mode is the conversational version: a full-page answer that invites follow-up questions and cites sources as it goes. Both are built on Google’s index and its ranking systems, and both send far fewer clicks to the results below than a normal page did, which is why informational traffic drops on affected queries. Optimizing for them, as one of the four services under my AI search optimization hub and part of my SEO services, means two things: being one of the cited sources when an AI answer appears for your queries, and making sure the queries that produce enquiries still bring the visit. The good news is that the sources Google cites are, in most cases, pages already ranking well for the query or for the sub-questions the answer was assembled from. The work is therefore an extension of ranking, not a replacement for it.
Who this is for
- Businesses in Australia, the UK and the USA whose Search Console shows impressions holding and clicks falling on informational queries.
- Companies whose category and comparison queries now show an AI Overview citing competitors, directories or publishers rather than them.
- Publishers and service businesses deciding which informational content is still worth producing.
- Nepali businesses selling abroad, whose buyers see AI answers even where Nepali searchers do not yet.
What the service includes
- Trigger analysis: your keyword map sampled from the target country to record which queries show an AI Overview, which show AI Mode prompts, which show neither, and how that has changed. Commercial queries usually show fewer AI answers than informational ones; the map shows where the risk and the opportunity actually are.
- Citation analysis: for each triggered query, the pages cited and what they have in common: format, depth, freshness, authority, and how directly they answer the sub-questions the overview is built from.
- Page work: restructuring or writing the pages that should be cited, answer-first, covering the sub-questions an overview typically assembles, with clear facts, dates and attribution, following the pattern on the answer engine optimization page.
- Follow-up coverage for AI Mode: mapping the follow-up questions AI Mode suggests for your topics and making sure your page, or a linked page, answers them, so a session that starts on a competitor’s citation can end on yours.
- Ranking foundation: the technical, on-page and link work that gets the underlying page into the top results, because citations follow rankings, with the technical SEO and on-page SEO services.
- Content strategy adjustment: which informational topics still justify investment, which should be merged into commercial pages, and which should be dropped, decided through content SEO and strategy.
- Tracking: AI Overview presence and citations for the query set re-sampled monthly from the target location, and Search Console clicks and impressions for the underlying pages reported alongside, with the caveat that Google does not separate AI Overview traffic in its reports.
How the work runs
- Baseline. Query set, trigger map, cited sources and a Search Console before-picture for the affected pages, delivered as part of the AI visibility audit.
- Prioritization. Queries ranked by commercial value, by whether an AI answer appears, and by how close your page already is to being cited.
- Fix the foundation. Ranking, crawlability and structured data problems on the priority pages.
- Rewrite and extend. Priority pages made citable and follow-up questions covered.
- Re-sample after indexing. Four to six weeks after publication, then monthly, recording citations gained and lost.
- Adjust. Content plan updated as triggers change, which they do frequently.
What I will tell you honestly
- Google does not report AI Overview impressions or clicks separately, so “traffic from AI Overviews” cannot be measured directly; changes are inferred from query-level click-through and from sampling.
- Triggers change week to week. A query that shows an overview today may not next month, and the reverse.
- Availability of these features differs by country and language and has been expanding; I check what your target market’s queries show rather than assuming, and for Nepal I sample the actual results rather than relying on announcements.
- Being cited does not guarantee a click. For informational queries the value is often brand exposure; for commercial queries it is usually the visit. I prioritize the second.
What you receive
- The trigger and citation map for your query set, with the before-picture from Search Console.
- Prioritized page work, implemented or briefed, with follow-up coverage for AI Mode.
- Monthly re-sampling and reporting with the method stated.
- A content strategy recommendation on which informational topics remain worth producing.
This work is included at the Growth and Enterprise tiers on the SEO packages and pricing page. Where the priority is ChatGPT, Perplexity and other assistants rather than Google, the generative engine optimization page describes that work.
