How the Instagram Explore placement works
Explore is where Instagram shows people posts from accounts they do not follow, chosen from what they have already watched, liked and saved. It carries two ad surfaces. The first is the discovery grid itself, listed in Meta Ads Manager as Instagram Explore home. The second is the scrolling feed a person lands in after tapping a post out of that grid, listed simply as Instagram Explore.
Neither is bought directly. You allow them. Advantage+ placements switches Explore on by default, and the auction then decides how much of your budget lands there, based on where your creative looks likely to produce the result you asked for at the lowest cost. Switch to manual placements and you can include or exclude it, but you are then bidding against advertisers who have left the system free to choose.
Why Instagram Explore matters
Explore reaches people in a browsing mood rather than a following mood. Nobody arrives there to see a particular account, so the audience is genuinely cold. That is useful when your custom audiences are small, which is common for businesses in Nepal where the page following and the website traffic feeding retargeting are both modest.
It is usually one of the cheaper surfaces in an account, because attention in a discovery grid is shallower than in the main feed. That makes it a sensible place to let a prospecting campaign wander, and a poor place to expect a considered purchase decision on the first view.
Common mistakes with Instagram Explore
The usual error is excluding it out of habit. Advertisers hear that Explore delivers cheap, low-quality impressions, turn it off, and narrow the auction for every remaining placement in the same ad set. Unless the placement breakdown shows Explore producing traffic that never converts, leaving it on costs you nothing.
The opposite mistake is judging it on the wrong creative. A landscape image built for a website banner is squeezed and ignored in a grid full of native-looking vertical posts. Explore rewards content that looks like content, so an ad that announces itself as an ad is passed over before it is read.
How to act on it
Start with placements open and let the system distribute spend. Once delivery is substantial enough to mean something, open the placement breakdown in Ads Manager and read cost per result by placement rather than click-through rate. A placement can look busy and sell nothing, and the reverse also happens.
If Explore is genuinely underperforming, treat it as a creative problem first. Supply a vertical asset and a stronger opening frame through placement asset customisation rather than excluding the placement outright, and revisit the decision every time the creative changes. If Explore performs well, that tells you the ad works without any surrounding context, which usually means it will carry into Reels and Stories too. Placement choices sit inside the wider structure of an Instagram ads campaign, so change one thing at a time and let delivery settle before reading the numbers again.
