How click to message works
You build the ad as normal but change its destination. Instead of a website URL, the ad points at a conversation, and tapping it opens a chat thread with your business inside whichever app Meta has chosen for that person — Messenger, Instagram Direct or WhatsApp. You decide which of those apps are eligible when the campaign is set up.
The thread does not open empty. A greeting you have written is waiting, usually with a few tappable questions beneath it so the person can start without composing anything. From that point it is an ordinary chat: their messages land in your business inbox, and whoever is watching replies. Meta counts the thread as a conversation and reports it, but it has no idea what was said or whether anything was sold.
Why click to message matters
It removes the two steps most likely to lose someone on a phone — loading a page and typing into a form. For businesses whose customers already ask questions by chat, which is the normal way to buy across much of Nepal and South Asia, it matches how people behave rather than asking them to change.
It also suits anything that needs a conversation before a price exists: a quotation, a booking with dates to check, a product where the first question is always the same. A form cannot answer a question, and a chat can. The trade is that you are now buying work rather than records, and every reply costs somebody’s attention.
Common mistakes with click to message
Running these ads with nobody minding the inbox is the one I see most. Threads open, questions arrive, and hours pass. In chat the expectation is a reply while the person is still in the app, so an unattended messaging campaign performs worse than no campaign at all — it spends money to disappoint people.
Selecting every app because more is better is the second. Each destination arrives in a different place, and if the team only checks one of them, the rest are silently ignored. The third is judging the campaign on website conversions. There is no landing page, so your conversion tracking will show nothing and the campaign will look dead while the phone is busy.
How to act on it
Start by deciding who replies and when, then choose only the apps that person can see. One well-watched destination beats three that are open.
Write the opening message so it does work: say what you do in a line, and ask one question whose answer tells you whether this is a real enquiry. Give the tappable options the person is most likely to need, and make sure each one leads somewhere rather than dead-ending in a full stop. Keep a record outside the chat app — a name, a phone number and an outcome in your sales system — because a conversation nobody logged is a lead you cannot follow up next month. If you want these campaigns built and staffed properly, the page on WhatsApp and Messenger ads covers the setup.
