How agentic search optimisation works

Agentic search optimisation is the practice of making a site’s content and data usable by software agents, not only by people and search crawlers. The reasoning is that an agent arriving to finish a task needs three things: facts it can extract without guessing, actions it can perform without a human hand on the mouse, and some reliable statement of what your business can actually do.

Be clear about its status. This is a vendor term, not a documented programme run by a search engine. Different agencies and tool makers define it differently — some mean structured data and clean HTML, some mean proposed files like llms.txt, some mean an API a machine can call. No engine publishes a specification you can conform to and no report scores you against one, so anyone selling a certified version of it is inventing the certificate.

Why agentic search optimisation matters

The shift underneath the label is real even where the label is loose. More journeys now begin with a model summarising or acting rather than a person scanning a page of links, and a site whose important facts live inside a script, an image or a chat widget cannot take part in that at all.

It matters more for small businesses than for large ones. An agent comparing suppliers does not know or care what your brand campaign cost; it compares what it can read. Being unambiguous about what you sell, where you work and how someone starts is cheap, and it flattens a little of the ground.

Where agentic search optimisation goes wrong

Two confusions cost people money. The first is the abbreviation. ASO has meant app store optimisation for years, and a proposal that quietly reuses those letters is at best careless. Ask a supplier which one they mean before agreeing to anything.

The second is treating unproven files as deliverables. Publishing a file no engine has confirmed it reads is housekeeping for a future that may not arrive in that shape, and it turns into a genuine cost the moment the file drifts out of date and starts telling agents things your live pages no longer say.

What to do about it

Work on the parts that hold true whichever definition wins. State prices, locations, availability and contact routes as page text. Mark up the things that have real, documented types — organisation, product, service, opening hours — with structured data, so the facts travel without interpretation. Keep the site fast, crawlable and free of layouts that only make sense to someone holding a mouse.

Then measure the one thing that can be measured: whether assistants describe your business correctly. Put your customers’ own questions to them, record what comes back, and repair the pages that produced a wrong answer. That is honest work with an observable result, which is more than most checklists sold under this name can offer.

Do and do not

Do

  • Ask a supplier which definition of ASO they mean
  • State prices, locations and services as page text
  • Test what assistants say about you, then fix pages

Do not

  • Buy certification for a standard that does not exist
  • Publish files you will not keep up to date
  • Drop proven SEO work for an unproven label

Questions people ask about this

Is agentic search optimisation the same as SEO?

No, and it does not replace it. Search engine optimisation targets engines that publish documentation, run reports and rank pages. Agentic search optimisation is a loose label for making the same content usable by software that acts on it. The technical work overlaps heavily — readable text, structured data, a fast site — but only one of the two has rules you can check yourself against.

Do I need special files to do this?

No. The files usually named are proposals, and no major engine has confirmed it uses them as a retrieval or ranking input. If you publish one, treat it as an experiment, keep it accurate, and remove it rather than let it go stale. The observable gains come from page text, structured data and a site that does not need JavaScript to state a price.

Does ASO not mean app store optimisation?

It has for years, and it still does in app marketing. Some vendors now use the same three letters for agentic search optimisation, which makes proposals and job adverts genuinely ambiguous. Ask which is meant before signing anything. If the work involves App Store or Play listings, keywords, screenshots and ratings, it is the app meaning.
